Unsecured wireless networks face the risk of being exploited by piggybackers. A group of people, known as wardrivers, spend their time collecting information regarding such wireless networks in order to help those who want to use them to access the internet without paying for it.

The Queensland Police have decided to take the responsibility of protecting locals from such situations. They will be following the same strategy as the offenders by collecting as much information as possible regarding unsecured networks. This will help them identify unsecured Wi-Fi routers and notify their owners that they are at risk and should take steps to protect themselves.

Brian Hay, the Detective Superintendent of the Police, was quoted as saying that this initiative is on the lines of the earlier safety drives conducted by the Police when they checked whether all the cars in public places such as railway stations were locked. When they found an unlocked car, they used to leave a message for the owner regarding the dangers of doing so.

Since piggybacking on networks is becoming a big problem, Hay said that it is time that the Police started paying attention to it. As the plan is to do field work in small areas and to then use the media to publicise both the issue and proper safeguards, Mr. Hay believes that this plan will therefore not call for any major resource expenditure.
